Filming Interviews for U.S. Soccer in England
Last week I went to England to film some interviews for U.S. Soccer with Men’s National Team players Deandre Yedlin and Cameron Carter-Vickers, as well as their coaches and families.
I met up with U.S. Soccer videographers Nick Burton and Logan Beerman in on a layover in Dublin, Ireland, and we flew together to Newcastle, UK. Yedlin, a member of the 2014 World Cup team, has become a regular for Newcastle United, and was selected as one of the players U.S. Soccer would profile for a video series on the next generation of national team players.
We spent a lot of time with Deandre and his grandparents, at his house, favorite restaurant, his barbershop, at training, and of course, at St. James’ Park, the Magpies historic stadium - where we saw Newcastle beat Huddersfield. We also sat down to chat with his coach Rafa Benitez, who helped bring the club back to the Premier League after arriving from Real Madrid.
A few days later we drove down to Ipswich on the southeastern coast, where Carter-Vickers was playing on loan from Tottenham. Unfortunately Cam didn’t play on the day - a strange schedule quirk had Ipswich Town play twice in three days, and he had played two days earlier. Still, we visited his mom’s house where he grew up, the coastal town Southen-on-Sea, and his own house near London, and also talked with Ipswich coach Micky McCarthy.
